The majority of special education teachers are eligible to teach students up to 22 years of age, but they are often limited to teaching elementary, middle, or high school ages due to their respective teaching positions. Special educators like those at a school in Florida are able to foster student learning in different ways within their schools. Several of the duties they do are similar to what general educators do. They plan and present lessons based on state standards, continuously evaluate the student’s comprehension of the lesson, reteach if needed, oversee the progress of students, and keep a grade book. However, a normal special education teacher’s job description includes some important distinctions. Read on to know some of the roles and responsibilities of special education teachers.   

  • Create and keep IEPs

    When it’s confirmed that a particular student is eligible for special education, a team starts meeting in order to create a personalized IEP that will satisfy the student’s requirements. This IEP is comprised of the student, his/her parents, the special education teacher, a minimum of one of the student’s regular class teachers, as well as other specialists and administrators. They meet within the year to talk about the progress of the student and if the IEP requires adjustment in any way. All members contribute to the development of the document, but it’s the special education teacher who provides the distinct input regarding the special requirements, strategies of learning, modifications needed, and implementation.

  • Give individualized instruction
    Each student, regardless if he/she has special requirements or not has different learning styles. It’s of paramount importance that teachers have to be able to identify the learning differences and adjust the lessons to make them suitable to their specific group of students. However, providing exceptional student education to students who have disabilities and special learning requirements ranging from autism to visual impairment needs specific training that is not given to general teachers. The utilization of assistive and adaptive technologies that aid students in overcoming their physical or cognitive limitations.
  • Evaluate student performance
    Although they can also be adapted to satisfy students’ requirements, evaluations are continuing. They may be as informal like students showing a thumb up or down to indicate their comprehension, or they can be formal like a statewide end-of-course test. Special education teachers oversee the progress of students via assessments. This will help them determine whether they are achieving their yearly IEP aims.
  • Meet with parents
    It’s typical for special education teachers to meet and communicate with the student’s parents more than a normal general teacher will do due to the extra oversight and the individual attention required by several of their students.
