Increasing independence by beginning in the classroom and progressing to the home, special education school, and community. You may help your loved one with autism learn the tools that will allow them to be more independent throughout their life by introducing these abilities early and building block by block.
- Improve Communication
Strengthening your child’s communication skills and providing tools to help express preferences, desires, and feelings is an important step toward increasing independence. Consider using alternative/additional communication and visual supports, as well as enrolling them at our school in Florida. - Create a Visual Schedule
Our special education teachers employ a visual schedule that helps our students transition from activity to activity with less urging. They will gradually gain freedom in doing this activity, making decisions, and engaging in things that interest them. - Work on Self-Care Abilities
Brushing teeth, combing hair, and other activities of daily living (ADLs) are critical life skills to teach your child as early as possible so they can master them later in life. Include these activities on your child’s schedule so they become accustomed to having them as part of the daily routine. - Improve Your Vocational Skills
Make a list of their abilities, skills, and interests, and use it to guide the types of vocational activities included as objectives. Consider all of the ways you have fostered your child’s independence up to this point: communication skills, self-care, interests and activities, and future objectives.
